Update on Winter Weather Portion of S. Rockies/Plains Storm...


At mid-morning, an upper level storm system was gathering energy over the southwest U.S. (inside the yellow circled area on the water vapor satellite image above).

This system will lift out to the East later today and into Monday, producing locally heavy snow across the southern and portions of the central Rockies, into the adjacent high plains of West Texas.

Snow should begin in earnest across the affected areas after Midnight tonight, and continue into Monday.

The image below shows the probability of at least 4 inches of snow through 6am CST on Monday:

The snow will become more widespread toward dawn and into the daylight hours on Monday, as shown by the same snowfall probability graphics below, valid for the period 6am CST Monday through 6am CST Tuesday.  First, the probability of at least 4 inches of snow:

A variety of winter weather advisories, watches and warnings are in effect for the region through Monday:


A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the areas in pink, which includes the Midland/Odessa area, as well as Carlsbad and Roswell.  The area in purple depicts a Winter Storm Watch, including the city of Lubbock.

Winter weather advisories are in effect for the areas in the lighter tan shadings.

Folks across this region should keep abreast of the latest weather information concerning this storm system.  Take the time today to stock up on some extra supplies and be prepared to stay indoors on Monday and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

This storm system will produce widespread rain and a chance of severe weather further East through mid-week.  Stay tuned for a detailed update on that later today...
