Slippery Morning Across South Texas


The above image (click to enlarge) shows snow and ice reports from south Texas overnight and this morning.  Some of the more impressive reports have been highlighted by the blue text boxes adjacent to the reported location.


In general, one-half inch snowfall amounts were widespread across the region, with localized amounts of 1-2 inches, especially in Northern and Eastern portions of the region.


The slight surprise with this event was the thin layer of glazed ice that preceeded the snowfall overnight.  This condition was expected along the coast and into the coastal bend/plains, but not as far as West as I-35.   The culprit was a thin layer of warm air at about 5,000-7,000 feet that overspread the region late yesterday evening.


Area school kids (including mine) were thrilled to learn that most of the major districts had closed today (yeah, over a thin layer of ice and 0.5 to 1 inch of snow - but hey, this is south Texas).


The snow was very, very dry and powdery - not the best for making a snowman.  Here is our impressive attempt:
